Broke as a joke

As I’m still living the unemployed life, I have rediscovered the lost art of frugality. How does one with loads of free time entertain themselves cheaply in a city as pricey as San Francisco?

– Free admissions to many museums one day a month
– RSVP for guestlists to clubs where entry is free before a certain time
– Go on urban hikes along beaches, parks and national recreation areas
– Take advantage of some ridiculously cheap happy hours
– Volunteer for organizations in exchange for free entry to events (usher an opera, selling tickets for a film festival)
– Brush up on your reading with the latest from public libraries
– Attend book readings (now I know where all the old people hang out)
– Go to dive bars that feature live music with no cover
– Entertain at home or at friends’ houses where its BYOB

My favorite sites, bar none, for inexpensive entertainment listings in SF are funcheapSF and Myopenbar. For nightlife, going, nitevibe and flavorpill are good bets. One last suggestion for the true misers- remember to down a couple drinks before heading out, that way you’ll only need to buy one or two. Just cause you’re broke, doesn’t mean you can’t be a belligerent drunk!

I second the pre-funking plan. Add “bring a flask” to the list and you’re good. Besides intoxication, SF is just so fucking easy to entertain yourself in. I could name a few MUNI lines that will keep you stimulated for hours…
